Workshop Description:

This workshop is geared toward practicing clinicians with at least introductory prior training in hypnosis, and those who would like to refresh their skills. It offers comprehensive instruction in the theory and application of hypnosis in a clinical setting through lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and small group practice with supervision and feedback.

The workshop enables participants to increase their theoretical and practical knowledge of hypnotic skills and applications for a variety of clinical symptoms. Topics of instruction include: advanced and specialized hypnotic inductions, hypnotic susceptibility scales, construction of hypnotic metaphors, ego strengthening, pain management and other medical applications, anxiety and habit disorders, working through trauma, insight-oriented and exploratory hypnosis, and integration of hypnosis into practice.

After this training, participants can expect to use hypnosis more confidently with their client population.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

1.Describe and demonstrate three advanced techniques to induce a hypnotic trance.
2. Describe and demonstrate two deepening and re-alerting techniques.
3. Describe at least four clinical conditions in which hypnotic techniques may be used.
4. Define and apply two ego-strengthening techniques.
5. Describe three indications and contraindications for hypnotic pain relief.
6. Identify six hypnotic techniques for pain management.
7. Identify three indications and contraindications for age regression and abreactive work.
8. Identify three different techniques for facilitating age regression.
9. Identify three current research findings on hypnosis, memory, and trauma.
10. Identify three methods for cognitive reframing and working through trauma.
11. Explain three hypnotic techniques and their rationale for treating anxiety disorders.
12. Identify four hypnotic techniques to treat sleep disorders.
13. Understand three principles of constructing therapeutic metaphors.
14. Describe three exploratory hypnotic methods.
15. Describe three ethical-legal issues and standards for professional conduct in using hypnosis clinically.

Brenda Byrne, PhD:  Licensed Psychologist,  Partner Margolis Berman Byrne Health Psychology. She is past President of the Greater Philadelphia Pain Society,  GPSCH Past President; Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, and Director, Seasonal Affective Disorder Clinic at Jefferson Medical College. Specializes in pain and stress management, sleep disorders, seasonal affective disorder, hypnosis and EMDR. ASCH Approved Consultant.

Karen Clark-Schock, PsyD., ATR-BC: Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified Art Therapist. Private practice in Paoli, PA, specializing in women’s issues, imagery for health and pain relief, stress management and optimizing creativity as a resource and strategy for problem solving and life transitions.  Adjunct Professor and Director of Art Therapy at the University of the Arts as well as Assistant Professor within the Hahnemann Creative Arts in Therapy program, at Drexel University.

Linda Shrier, PhD:Clinical psychologist in private practice, Philadelphia. She has practiced and taught hypnosis for over 30 years. ASCH approved Consultant.

Persons holding a Doctoral Degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology, or Speech-Language Pathology, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Persons holding a Master’s Degree in Social Work, in Marriage and Family Therapy, in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or in Speech-Language Pathology, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Nurses holding a Master’s Degree or advanced subspecialty training and certification, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Students of these disciplines enrolled in doctoral or master’s level programs (must submit proof of their status with registration).


Psychology Continuing Education Credits:
Margolis Berman Byrne Health Psychology, P.C. (MBB) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. MBB maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

ASCH Credit:
This 20-hour course is approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and as such is applicable toward membership in the Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH), and toward ASCH Certification requirements.

Clinical Social Worker, Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist Continuing Education:
As an APA-approved course, the awarded 20 CE credits for full attendance may be submitted to the PA State Board of Social Workers, Professional Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists.  For questions call the State Board at 717-783-1389.
