Workshop Description:

This workshop will provide an in-depth introduction to Ego State theory and therapy with an emphasis on clinical application. The intrinsic role of clinical hypnosis in the development and ongoing use of EST will be elucidated. The evolution of EST, a “hypnoanalytic” approach, will be discussed in the context of previous “polypsychic” models and the more recent developmental neurological “self-state” models (Siegel, 1999).

Key concepts that will be covered include the origins of ego states, the different types of ego states, indications and contraindications for use of EST and phases of the integrative process.  Clinical case material will be used to illustrate the integration of EST into clinical practice and ongoing psychotherapy cases. Participants will learn a variety of hypnotic techniques for accessing ego states, forming therapeutic alliances with ego states, developmental repair, “ego strengthening” with individual ego states, developing resources in the ego state system, resolving ego state conflict, facilitating interstate relationality and promoting integration. The opportunity to hypnotically access a personal ego state through an experiential exercise will be offered for those who are interested.

The application of EST in the treatment of unresolved trauma and psychosomatic disorders will be illustrated with clinical case material including videos and patients drawings.
