INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP IN CLINICAL HYPNOSIS

Certificates of attendance will be distributed at the end of the workshop.
No credit is awarded for partial attendance.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is geared toward practicing clinicians and students in the health care professions with no prior training in hypnosis, or those who would like to refresh their skills. It offers comprehensive instruction in the theory and application of hypnosis in a clinical setting through lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and small group practice with supervision and feedback.

The workshop enables participants to obtain a foundation of basic knowledge and skills in clinical hypnosis underlying future more advanced training modules. Topics of instruction include: formal induction, deepening and realerting techniques, history, definitions and misconceptions of hypnosis, hypnotic language and communication, self-hypnosis, managing resistance, ego-strengthening techniques, hypnosis with anxiety and habit disorders, hypnosis with children and adolescents, hypnosis in medicine and psychology, treatment planning and integration of hypnosis into practice, ethics and professional conduct.

After this training, participants can expect to begin using hypnosis with their client population.

Total teaching hours: 20

Supervised small group practice hours: 6

Workshop Schedule  
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

1. Describe and demonstrate three techniques to induce a hypnotic trance
2. Describe and demonstrate two deepening and re-alerting techniques;
3. Describe at least four clinical conditions in which hypnotic techniques may be used;
4. Define and apply two ego-strengthening techniques;
5. Identify two current research findings on hypnosis and memory;
6. Explain two hypnotic techniques for treating anxiety disorders;
7 . Identify three hypnotic techniques to treat habit disorders;
8. Identify three specifics of hypnotic language;
9. Identify three clinical applications of hypnosis in medical and psychological practice;
10.  Describe three ethical-legal issues and standards for professional conduct in using hypnosis clinically.

Eileen Casaccio, PsyD:  Licensed psychologist, private practice in Rosemont, PA.  Clinical supervisor, Daemion Counseling, Berwyn, PA.  GPSCH Board member.  Adjunct assistant professor, Widener University, Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology.

Reinhild Draeger-Muenke, PsyD, LMFT:Licensed Family Therapist, private practice Bala Cynwyd, PA,  GPSCH Vice-President and Program Chair. Moderator, ASCH Board of Governors. Treats emotional and medical trauma in children and adults. ASCH- Approved Consultant.

Scott Fried, MD: Board certified in orthopedic surgery,  chief surgeon and director of the medical self-hypnosis program at The Upper Extremity Institute in Blue Bell, PA Has lectured and written extensively on treatment of complex nerve injuries. Member, American Medical Association, Hand Surgery Section of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, Greater Philadelphia Pain Society, American Association for Hand Surgery (A.A.H.S.), ASCH, ISH, GPSCH Member at Large.

Richard Kluft, MD, PhD: Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Temple University School of Medicine; President, Society for Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis; Past-President GPSCH, ASCH, ISST&D. Private practice of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and medical hypnosis in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Author of over 225 scientific articles and book chapters. His special interests include trauma, dissociation, dissociative disorders, and resolving therapeutic impasses. He has taught extensively here and abroad.

Julie H. Linden, PhD: Licensed Psychologist, private practice, Philadelphia, PA, ISH Secretary/Treasurer, President-Elect; ASCH Past President, GPSCH Past President. Specializes in the treatment of children and the emotional sequelae of chronic illness and trauma. ASCH-Approved Consultant.

Michele Lyons-Fadel, MSS, LCSW:  Clinical Social Worker. Outpatient Psychotherapist, Evergreen Counseling Associates, Phila, PA.  GPSCH Current and Past Treasurer.  Specializes in anxiety and depressive disorders, PTSD and Dissociative Disorders. ASCH Certified since 1999.

Persons holding a Doctoral Degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology, or Speech-Language Pathology, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Persons holding a Master’s Degree in Social Work, in Marriage and Family Therapy, in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or in Speech-Language Pathology, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Nurses holding a Master’s Degree or advanced subspecialty training and certification, who are licensed by the state in which they practice.

Students of these disciplines enrolled in doctoral or master’s level programs (must submit proof of their status with registration).

Psychology Continuing Education Credits:
Margolis Berman Byrne Health Psychology, P.C. (MBB) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. MBB maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

ASCH Credit:
This 20-hour course is approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and as such is applicable toward membership in the Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH), and toward ASCH Certification requirements.

Clinical Social Worker, Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist Continuing Education:
As an APA-approved course, the awarded 20 CE credits for full attendance may be submitted to the PA State Board of Social Workers, Professional Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists. For questions call the State Board at 717-783-1389.
