APPLICATIONS OF HYPNOSIS IN THE TREATMENT OF STRUCTURAL PATHOLOGY

Workshop Description:

This workshop will explore applications of hypnotic strategies and techniques in the treatment of character pathology and related developmental arrests and derailments with a special focus on borderline and narcissistic spectrum disorders. An integrated developmental conceptual paradigm will be presented to guide clinical understanding and psychotherapy planning. Hypnotic interventions for a range of core clinical problems will be presented including: boundary formation and stabilization, affect neutralization and impulse control, identity cohesion, the management of dissociation, and the maturation of primitive defenses such as splitting and projective identification. The lecture will be augmented with case presentations and demonstrations.

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  1.  Relate at least three clinical symptoms to core unfinished developmental tasks.
  2.  Identify at least two ways to integrate hypnosis into intensive psychotherapy for developmental arrest.
  3. Identify at least two specific hypnotherapeutic techniques for structure building and maturation. 
  4. Identify at least two hypnotherapeutic approaches to intervene with primitive and disruptive affect states and related acting out.
  5. Identify at least two hypnotherapeutic techniques to facilitate object permanence, object constancy and identity integration.
  6. Identify at least two hypnotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of dissociative phenomena.

For Dr. Elgan Baker, a Clinical Psychologist, clinical hypnosis has been a major focus of his professional career. He has been actively involved in research, practice, publishing and teaching involving hypnosis for over three decades.

Dr. Baker has served on numerous committees and has taught extensively at the national and international levels. He has served as Treasurer and President of the Division of Hypnosis of the American Psychological Association, Treasurer and President of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH), Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Hypnosis, and Board member, Treasurer, Past President and Current President of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis.

He is currently the Clinical Editor of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis.  Dr. Baker has served as Scientific Program and Workshop Chair for ASCH, has chaired numerous ASCH committees and currently is ASCH’s Treasurer and a member of the Executive Committee.



Target Audience: Psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists and other qualified health care providers interested in learning to provide practical and effective hypnotic interventions for the seriously emotionally disturbed client.

Continuing Medical Education Accreditation Statement: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis Education and Research Foundation (ASCH-ERF) and the Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis. The ASCH-ERF is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The ASCH-ERF designates this educational activity for up to 6 hours in Category I toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Physicians should claim only those hours of credit actually spent in the educational activity.

The ASCH-ERF adheres to ACCME Essential Areas and policies regarding industry support of continuing medical education. Clinical Social Worker, Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist Continuing Education: As an APA –approved course, the awarded 6 CE credits for full attendance may be submitted to the PA State Board of Social Workers, Professional Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists.
