SYMPTOMS AS SOLUTIONS

Workshop Description:

The Workshop Symptoms as Solutions explores the ways that the unconscious mind, which is seen as a benevolent, masterful and creative part of the personality, comes to the rescue of the self during times of stress and/or trauma.

Symptoms are seen as the product of a good thing gone awry. That is, thoughts, feelings and/or behaviors which were initially the unconscious mind’s solution to a dilemma faced by the self, have become problematic, much like the tail wagging the dog. Since the language of the unconscious mind is symbolic, it expresses itself metaphorically. These metaphors can reflect feelings, attitudes and cognitions, as well as being expressed behaviorally. In this workshop we will explore how the unconscious symbolically expresses solutions to dilemmas and how to translate these symptoms into constructive change utilizing hypnosis.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
  1. Participants will be able to identify the role that trauma can play in the creation of symptoms.
  2. Participants will be able to identify how symptoms can be viewed as the unconscious mind’s metaphorical solution to a dilemma.
  3. Participants will be able to identify how symptoms can represent both an unconscious conflict and the individual’s attempt at resolving the conflict.
  4. Participants will be able to identify how symptoms can both contain and express hypnotic phenomena.
  5. Participants will learn how utilizing metaphor can help bypass conscious resistance to reach a new, constructive solution.
  6. Participants will learn how to create treatment plans tailored to the individual client.

Molly DeLaney, PsyD, has incorporated clinical hypnosis in her psychotherapeutic work for over three decades. Having been introduced to hypnosis through a lecture/demonstration as well as being given a copy of the Structure of Magic (Bandler and Grinder, 1975), she was lucky enough to attend one of Milton Erickson’s seminars shortly before his death.  This experience combined with becoming immersed in psychoanalytic theory during her doctoral studies, resulted in Dr. DeLaney having tremendous respect for the creativity and ingenuity of the unconscious mind.

Dr. DeLaney has taught extensively at the national level and, together with Rick Voit, PhD, has published a very well received book on “Hypnosis in Clinical Practice: Steps for Mastering Hypnotherapy”. Currently, she is the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and previously served as ASCH Treasurer for two terms. She has served on numerous committees for ASCH, most notably as Certification Chair and presently co-leads a task force aimed at joining ASCH and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis into one organization. Lastly, she is co-chairing the Intermediate Program for the ASCH Annual Meeting in Boston (March 2009) which she hopes you will attend!
